I rarely shoot on Black & White because of the cost and hassle of getting it developed, I used to develop my own when I was at college but now I don't really have the time or space. I like this film, it's Ilford 3200 and even though it's designed for shooting at night/indoors, you get cool results if you're shooting on sunny days, the contrast is mad.

I love how old school it looks to, mad grain.

Took these photos in April 2009 but only got the film developed a few months ago!

Going Coastal...

Went to Burnham-on-Sea again, bought a Minolta X700 SLR in a charity shop in Bristol. Put a roll through it, weird but attractiove results. It's surprisingly sharp in comparison to my other SLRs. Some guy on flickr reckons it's got "shutter fade". R.I.P. Minolta X700, it was good whilst it lasted.

It was snowing, so obviously I had to go and see what my favourite place looked like under a blanket!

You can see St. Paul's Cathedral through this gap in the tree, it must be intentional landscaping which is really weird considering the overgrown state of the cemetery or maybe it purely coincidental!

We found the willow again, it was weird because we were talking about how we'd seen it in the summer near a really random pond, one that looked like it had been formed by a WW2 bomb or something! Anyway whilst we were talking about it we just stumbled across it and it's not like it's in an obvious place, spooky.

The war graves make me sad, they remind me of my visit to Ypres, although on a miniscule scale in comparison. All of them had crosses on except one, unknown faith...

This photo is rubbish, a combination of new untested camera and really old film, maybe 7 years old... Anyway I just had to get out into the snow!

I've gotten over my hatred for tescos and come to accept that my photos are poorly cropped, dust speckled and the colour is slightly off, in fact I quite like it! I did a bit of sneaky photoshop (a rarity for me) - to correct some of the worst affected.

So here are some shots from summer and autumn. NB. This explains my absence from the blog too as it took me this long to finish the films and get them processed!

I HATE TESCO

So I just got a pile of films I've had lying around from summer developed, 9 to be exact! I thought I'd take them to Tesco as it's only £2 per film on CD and I never had any complaints before apart from a few dodgy crops (to be expected when they are using automatic machines). Anyway got my films back today and I am so upset. The quality of service is just unacceptable, they have not only used a filthy developer but there are small (and large) chemical spots that appear on almost every photo, half of them are fogged and the rest just have really awful colour (black is now green, white is now beige). Plus they cropped the images which I specifically told them not to do. Anyway I'll never make that mistake again but I am just shocked at the carelessness of Tesco employees, there once was an old man who worked there and despite being slow and annoying he took care with other peoples belongings. I feel cheated, these are my memories - from my graduation, Christmas, New Years Eve and the summer (the only photo I have of me and my boyfriend now has chemical mess all over it). No doubt I will be going back to Tesco tomorrow to complain and get my money back for the processing plus film (not that it's compensation for destroying my photos. So disappointed.

And before I get any comments asking if it's my camera/film, I know it isn't as the photos were shot on at least 3 different types of film and up to 5 different cameras!

the other night i dreamt that my cat amber (the torbie in the bottom picture) was laying eggs, only they weren't eggs, they were rice krispies and i was trying to sell them as it was so cute when the tiny kittens eventually hatched out.

my cats have favourite places they like to sit, teddy likes this propagator that lies discarded on the roof of the shed, it gets pretty steamy when it rains, and he's still sitting inside it. amber likes the hula hoop, none of the other cats are allowed within it's protective circle - they'll get a swipe if they cross that shiney blue line.

Plymouth

Last weekend was spent travelling around the West Country with my boyfriend and his DJ mates. First stop was Burnham to visit his parents, then Plymouth via Taunton, then a drive to St.Ives, then a drive back to Plymouth from St.Ives at 3am, a brief wander round Plymouth, back to his parents house in Somerset and then Bristol on Monday morning! I picked up a good selection of 35mm cameras in Bristol Oxfam (which is managed by my boyfriend's mother) which I intend to try out as soon as I get the appropriate batteries/more film!

These photos are from a press shoot in Plymouth, I'll have more soon...

p.s. I am going to stop using expired crappy film and buy more of this fuji pro stuff, the colours are so rich and there's less obvious grain. I also noticed that skin tone is truer, not so washed out, a little creamy even! I always thought pro film was just the same as fuji superia but the results are more sophisticated.

A few weeks ago me and Emma visited the Royal Observatory in Greenwich to see the Astronomer of the year Photo Exhibition. Greenwich is such a lovely place with superb views and wonderful architecture, I would recommend a day trip.

notting hill carnival

Way back in August I went to Notting Hill Carnival for the first time in about 3 years. I forgot how much walking there is between soundsystems, how easy it is to lose people and that you're probably not gonna get your jerk chicken as the queues are stupid. However it's a feast for the eyes... and ears. And I got to do some bogling!

Polaroid is dead. The last stocks have now expired. It's the end of an art form. The end of an era in photography. We are losing analogue.

To commemorate there is an exhibition at the ATLAS Gallery in London which features a large selection of polaroid photography from a large variety of artists from Warhol to Bailey and Newton to Kértesz.

Today I bought a book in a junk shop in Greenwich.

The book was a collection of photographs by the photographer Norman Parkinson.
I have never heard of him nor seen his work before but I fell in love instantly.
His body of work spanned 5 decades and his fashion shots and celebrity shots are exquisite.

There is a lot of fun in his work, surreality and comedy!

I've never really been much of a fan of McGinley's work, yeah sure I appreciate it and some of his shots are just beautiful (a favourite)
but I do feel that his name became one which would fall into every conversation I had about photography with someone who didn't know a lot about contemporary photographers except for who Vice magazine was totally bumming. He has also spawned a following of copycats. It's not really that hard to put a few naked friends in a steamy room with a 40W bulb and talk a photo with a Yashica T4 now.

Tomorrow I am going to see his new work Moonmilk at the Alison Jaques gallery in London.

I am really looking forward to it. This series is so refreshing. It's well considered and the photographs are pure magic. Fantastical scenes inside huge caverns, lit up with hues of magenta and cyan. look carefully to spot the fragile naked bodies perched on rocky precipes.

I have an obsession with light, photographing light, in nature.
I'm also so happy I have started using my olympus trip 35 again, it's a truly amazing camera for the summertime (it only allows up to iso 200 and is very temperamental even if there is brilliant sunlight) the contrast it gives is just stunning.
Light sparkles.

Pac took me to visit his parents. The beach is at the end of the road.
Burnham is pretty quiet and full of pensioners and people on caravan holidays.
The beach was nice even though the tide was way out and you wouldn't want to swim in the sea there.

A clever series of candid photographs by photographer Mark Cowper. He is a resident of the Ethelburga tower in Battersea and has documented how his neighbours have decorated the space within their identical flats. Some look as if they aren't even inside a tower block at all!

i don't like diptychs

i've never been a fan of them, and i never use them in my work. except in the last post, where they occur naturally, made by a camera that splits the frame for you.

when presented with a diptych i am always left favouring one shot above another, they will never compliment each other perfectly. sometimes i will be put off an almost perfect image if it is stuck alongside one not quite as perfect.

some people insist on presenting all of their photos in diptych form, as if one photo by itself would get lonely. maybe they think their work needs a support, or a corresponding image, to help explain it.

what i am trying to say is that diptychs are detrimental to a photo's effect, until i find the perfect diptych, i'm never going to be happy seeing one.

I haven't used my Olympus Pen EE-2 for over a year. I forgot what a great camera it is and how fun it is to use. The quality of the images is astounding for a fixed focus camera, all you have to do is set the ISO and away you go!
